Social Media Policy
This policy sets out how the Court uses social media to communicate the work of the Supreme Court and JCPC to wider audiences. The Court currently has a social media presence on X, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube. Links to these platforms can be found at the bottom of the website. All of the channels are managed by the Court’s Communications Team.
X content
Followers of the @uksupremecourt X account can expect several tweets a week covering the cases, judgments, and corporate announcements of the Supreme Court and JCPC.
Instagram content
Followers of the @uksupremecourt Instagram can see life around the Court, with the account featuring information about public tours, exhibitions, wider educational work, and the outreach events that the Justices take part in.
As with the Supreme Court's X account, Instagram followers can expect several posts a week, as well as the occasional Instagram 'story'.
LinkedIn content
The LinkedIn account is used primarily to speak to the Court’s Legal audience both in the UK and abroad, and contains information about the professional life of the Court, speeches and interviews given by the Justices, international relations, and recruitment for roles.
YouTube content
The Court’s YouTube account contains videos of appeal hearings and judgment hand-downs (which may also be found on the Court’s websites), as well as recordings of major events at the Court such as valedictories and swearing-in of Justices, and promotional and educational videos.
Please note that all footage on our YouTube channel is covered by the Open Supreme Court Licence and may not be recorded, published or redistributed without express permission. You should contact the Court to specify the nature of your request.
Replies and direct messages
The Court does not generally respond to messages or replies posted on its social media accounts by the public. All messages to the Court should be sent through the official channels on the website.
FOI requests
We would prefer to receive Freedom of Information requests via this request form or by letter in order to assist us in giving a full response. However, we note the Information Commissioner's Office guidance on the validity of X as a channel for receiving such requests and will handle them in accordance with that guidance.
Following other accounts
We will follow organisations of relevance to us and may follow individuals where appropriate. The fact that the Court follows a social media account does not imply endorsement of any kind.
Availability
The Communications Team will generally update and monitor the social media accounts only during office hours. The social media platforms may occasionally become unavailable. The Supreme Court of the United Kingdom cannot accept responsibility for lack of service on these accounts due to downtime.
