Supreme Court welcomes 250,000th visitor

One of a group of young law students from the West Midlands visiting the UK Supreme Court in central London today became the court's 250,000th visitor.
Since the Supreme Court opened in October 2009, it has proved a significant draw for schools, colleges and tourists, averaging 70,000 visitors each year. Today's milestone was reached when a group of sixth form law students from Joseph Leckie Academy, Walsall, arrived for one of the 350 guided tours currently provided by the court to educational institutions each year.
Lord Neuberger, President of the Supreme Court, said: "The creation of the Supreme Court has separated the United Kingdom's top court from the Houses of Parliament and this has had a number of benefits. One of the most important benefits has been the opportunity which it has given us to welcome many more people to see the Court at work. We have been very encouraged by the number of visitors to the Court since it opened and today's milestone is particularly pleasing."
Raj Ghale, Head of Sixth Form at Joseph Leckie Academy, said: "Visiting the Supreme Court helps to bring alive the A and AS Level Law curriculum for our students. A number of these students are keen to go on to study law at university, and I am sure their visit will have inspired them to aim even higher. Joseph Leckie Academy is proud to have brought the 250,000th visitor to the court!"
Each of the party from the Academy received a goody bag of souvenirs from the court as well as the chance to meet the Court's Chief Executive, Jenny Rowe.
The Supreme Court is open every week day from 9.30am until 4.30pm, and visitors are encouraged to freely observe any hearings taking place. Visitors are able to collect summaries explaining the appeals being heard in court that day, as well as learning more about the court in its dedicated exhibition space.
