Supreme Court President, Deputy-President and three new justices sworn in
2 October 2017
Baroness Hale of Richmond has been officially sworn in as President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom in a ceremony at the Court this morning.
Lady Hale was sworn in alongside Deputy President Lord Mance, and three new Justices; Lady Black, Lord Lloyd-Jones and Lord Briggs, bringing the Supreme Court to its full complement of 12 Justices.
At the ceremony, which you can watch on our video on demand service, those being sworn in took it in turns to take an Oath of allegiance to Her Majesty the Queen, and the Judicial Oath. Each person then signed the Oaths Book, so that there is a permanent record of the Oaths they have taken, and the new Justices were presented with their gown and their Letters Patent; recording their appointment by Her Majesty the Queen.
Those being sworn in were then invited to take their seat on the Bench as a Justice of the Supreme Court, before processing to Westminster Abbey for the official opening of the legal year.
The Supreme Court's first hearings of the new legal year will commence on Wednesday 4 October (see Court sittings), with each of the new Justices scheduled to sit on a case.
