Sir John Anthony Dyson sworn in as 12th Justice

Sir John Anthony Dyson was this morning sworn in at a simple ceremony as the new 12th Justice of The Supreme Court of the United Kingdom.

The ceremony, in which the Judicial Oath and Oath of Allegiance were taken by Sir John, was watched by the other Justices of the Supreme Court, also dressed in their ceremonial robes, as well as friends, family and other guests.

Lord Phillips, President of the Supreme Court conducted the ceremony, before Sir John shook hands with each Justice in turn. He then bowed to them and they in turn bowed to him.

Lord Phillips, said: "I welcome Sir John as the 12th Justice of the Supreme Court, to fill the vacancy created by Lord Neuberger's appointment as Master of the Rolls.

"Today's ceremony was an important one in that the Court now has its full number of Justices. Sir John is a distinguished addition to the judicial expertise at the Court.

"The Court has been asked to examine a number of interesting and important appeals in the current term and I look forward to working with Sir John on these, and other high profile cases in the coming months and years."

  2. The Supreme Court of the United Kingdom was established through the Constitutional Reform Act 2005 and replaced the Appellate Committee of the House of Lords. It hears appeals on arguable points of law of the greatest public importance, for the whole of the United Kingdom in civil cases, and for England, Wales and Northern Ireland in criminal cases.
